Computer science/Software engineering at Delft University of Technology, Netherlands.
2020’s: Modernisation of my shuttle WCS, adaptation to 4-way shuttles.
2000’s and 2010’s: Defence industry, Autonomous Underwater Vehicles for Anti Submarine Warfare, and Mine Counter Measures, with an emphasis on autonomy and underwater communications.
1990’s and early 2000’s: Worked on the WCS for two companies that offered the first compact block storages, those were cable-pulled, 2-way shuttles, one shuttle in each aisle. Consultancy on a depalletizer-sorter-palletizer for deep frozen products. I developed a WCS for Actiw/Activ storages in Europe, called the LSS. The LSS was successfully installed in five warehouses of three different customers, all in Germany.
A compact shuttle storage typically consists of a building, a rack, a number of shuttles, and a WCS. A lot of attention goes to the size, performance, and quality of the building, the rack, and the shuttles. Understandably, if only because these components are expensive. At the end, however, the behaviour and performance of your compact shuttle warehouse is determined by the WCS. No shuttle, however well it performs, can compensate for an underperforming WCS. During my professional career I have seen a number of projects run into serious trouble because of problems in their WCS. I was fortunate enough to be able to help salvage some of these projects.
In my view it is not possible to predict the performance of a compact shuttle warehouse by studying its layout, the performance of its shuttles and lifts, and the composition of its inventory (the number of SKU’s).
The performance of a compact shuttle warehouse is determined by the storage (re-)organisation strategies, the shuttle routing strategies, and the deadlock mitigation strategies. All of these are implemented in the WCS. And they may be different for each project, each project may require its own, uniquely optimised strategies.
Contact me to know more about how I can help you improve performance in your Actiw/Actiw, 4-way shuttle, or truck-satellite shuttle warehouse, either through consultancy or through the deployment of (part of) my WCS.
